The 2025 Tucson Gem Show on 22nd St., a premier showcase of rare gemstones, fossils, and minerals, is going beyond its dazzling exhibits this year by launching the Asheville Rising Fundraiser. This initiative aims to support the city of Asheville, North Carolina, and its local artists who were profoundly impacted by Hurricane Helene.
A Story of Giving Back
Russell and Missy Carhart, co-founders of Hart Events and producers of the Tucson Gem Show on 22nd St., are no strangers to the devastation caused by natural disasters. Having experienced significant personal losses during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, they have made it their mission to assist communities in crisis. This commitment led to a partnership with Wendy White, founder of Asheville’s Let’s Choose Love Foundation and the Asheville Rising – Love Along the Way initiative.
The fundraiser’s goal is to revitalize Asheville’s River Arts District and provide direct support to four Asheville-based artists whose lives and workspaces were affected by the hurricane.
Spotlight on Asheville Rising Art Tent
The centerpiece of this year’s event is the Asheville Rising Art Tent, where attendees can explore and purchase art from four talented Asheville artists: Galen Frost Bernard, Daniel McClendon, Sandra Bottinelli, and Jesse Jason. Their unique styles and powerful stories reflect the resilience and creativity of their community.
Thanks to the support of Hart Events, the artists’ travel and shipping costs are covered, ensuring they can focus on showcasing their work. Proceeds from art sales will not only support the artists directly but also contribute to the Let’s Choose Love mini-grants, designed to rebuild and inspire growth in Asheville’s cultural hub.
Meet the Artists
- Galen Frost Bernard: Known for his nature-inspired works, Bernard’s River Arts District studio was deeply affected by the floodwaters of Hurricane Helene. Despite the challenges of rebuilding, he continues to create art that reflects the beauty of his surroundings and the resilience of his spirit.
- Daniel McClendon: McClendon’s vibrant, animal-themed paintings explore instinct and identity. His studio, situated near the French Broad River, sustained significant damage during the hurricane, but his commitment to his craft remains unwavering.
- Sandra Bottinelli: With a career spanning nearly three decades, Bottinelli combines multicultural influences and experimental techniques in her work. A longtime presence in Asheville’s art scene, she’s determined to help revitalize the community she calls home.
- Jesse Jason: Jason’s layered, exploratory paintings tell stories of resilience and risk-taking. After losing his Riverview Station studio, he adapted by creating art under a canopy in his driveway, proving that creativity can flourish even in the most challenging conditions.
